Cammish, Jenkinson and Sheader Families

A look at the electoral register in 1905-06 reveals that certain streets within the old town had lots of houses lived in by fishing and seafaring families. Quay Street for instance reveals seven houses occupied by the Sheader family. Each of these houses may of had families with 7 or 8 children sleeping tip to toe in one bed. The family names of Cammish, Crawford, Sheader, Appleby, Normandale, Bayes, Dalton and Messenger show up very often.

The most prolific family name appears to be Cammish but there are quite a few Jenkinsons as well. Some of these addresses have no families with no fishing links but many of do. The fishing families lived within the Old Town and did not really mix with anyone else. Even within the Old Town there were hotspots such as Sandside, Quay Street and all the little streets nearby by such as Tuthill, Princess Lane, Salmon Steps, Castlegate, and Potter Lane. The fishing community really was tightly knit. Areas considered as part of the Old Town do not feature so many fishing family names such as Eastborough and St Sepulchre Street.

Those family names with obvious links to the sea and fishing appear with an asterisk below.
