The attack on Scarborough by the German cruisers in 1914 was long remembered. ETW Dennis the printers brought out commemorative booklets on the raid full of photos of the houses and buildings damaged. Later, exhibitions sprang up around town. The council received the following two letters asking for help with exhibitions.

The Committee of the Scarborough Townsmen's Association are arranging for the opening of "Dunollie" Filey Road, as damaged by the German bombardment, as a memento and exhibition of the Bombardment.
A charge of 6d per person will be made and it is suggested that the proceeds be devoted to the British Red Cross Society and the Scarborough Hospital.
It has been suggested that you might assist us by lending us a few exhibits. Possibly it can be arranged to loan us one of two shells and a copy of the plan of the town you prepared. We should take every care of the exhibits and see that they were returned to you at the end of the season.

The Council of the above named Society is anxious to make a collection of Bombardment mementoes for exhibition at the museum.
The members would be very glad if your committee would grant them the loan of one six inch shell, one three inch shell and a few other bombardment mementoes now in the possession of the Corporation.
